Where We Stand

Cable providers are committed to respecting our customers’ privacy and safeguarding their personal information.
Consumers deserve consistency, control, and confidence regarding the handling of their personal information. ISPs are committed to providing customers with transparent privacy policies, including the ability to opt out of data sharing. But with online usage now integral in our daily routines, it is time for a technology neutral federal data privacy law that protects consumers while promoting responsible data use for new products and services.

Current Challenge

With bipartisan consensus on the need for comprehensive federal privacy legislation, it is time for Congress to move forward on a uniform, national framework.
A national privacy framework will enhance consumer protection by ensuring consistency, reducing fragmentation, and fostering innovation and investment. A uniform approach ensures clarity and predictability, avoiding the confusion of varying privacy rules based on online interactions or differing state regulations. Privacy legislation should establish a single, cohesive standard with meaningful preemption of state laws, enforced by one regulatory agency.

Path Forward

As policymakers work to craft a national privacy policy, ISPs are committed to key principles on consumer rights and business obligations– all of which our companies already actively provide.
Customers receive clear and conspicuous notice that describes what information is collected, how it is used, and when it is shared with third parties.
Customers have easy-to-understand choices, based on the sensitivity of their data, that allow them to control the use and distribution of their personal information, including the ability to opt out of data sharing.

ISPs employ physical, technical, and administrative security measures to protect customer information that is collected and/or stored. These measures account for the sensitivity of the data, among other considerations. Also, ISPs notify affected parties of data breaches and without unreasonable delay when an unauthorized person acquires customers’ sensitive personal information.
